Rosewood tree information
Genuine Rosewood belongs to Dalbergia Genus. “Dalbergia Nigra” wood is famous in the Western world. Dalbergia nigra is well known as “Brazilian Rosewood”. The tree has a strong sweet smell that persists for many years this is one of the main reasons it is called the Rosewood tree.
Dalbergia Latifolia is known as “East Indian Rosewood” or sonokeling. It is a classic tree native to India and also found in Chiniot, Pakistan. Dalbergia sissoo species belongs to India and Bangladesh and is well known as the Sheesham tree.
Rosewood in Hindi is known as Sheesham tree and it is widely cultivated for commercial purposes due to the huge demand for its furniture, beds, sofa sets, paper industry etc.
The timber of the tree is dense and has rot resistance capacity. Its commercial use is wide due to the huge demand for timber for making cabinets, flooring and carving. Due to the after-work quality, it is often sold as genuine rosewood or teak and it is exported as a quality veneer. While comparing this tree with the teak tree it has lower quality and price than the teak tree.

How to start rosewood farming in India
Some best practices are given below and by implementing them one can easily start rosewood cultivation in their region.
Soil requirements
It can grow on a wide range of soils but it prefers well-drained deep moist soil.
Temperature requirement
High temperature – 38°C to 50°C, Minimum temperature – 0°C to 15°C.
Average rainfall
Rainfall ranges from 750 mm to 5000 mm.
Propagation method
Seeds – Seed ripening time is different according to the state. February and March are considered the best times for seed collection.
Sowing time – Seeds are sown in the nursery in March. To get a good plant size by July month regular watering and weed removal process is practised.
Plant cuttings – 5 to 8-cm tall rosewood plants are picked for plantation in the main field.
Sheesham plant types
The tree has two types. Desi or simple and hybrid rosewood. Usually, the simple variety takes a longer time to grow in comparison to the hybrid variety. A simple tree needs 25 long years to mature whereas a hybrid variety needs only 10 to 12 years to get mature. Hybrid Sheesham varieties are prepared in laboratories in the form of tissue culture.
Where to plant
One can plant sheesham at the borders of farms, side-by-road railway stations, schools, panchayat bhavan, factory grounds, temples, gurdwara, children’s parks etc. Rosewood plantations should not be done near lake ponds or in the field with standing water.
Tree planting distance
Hybrid farming – 9 x 9 ft, Mixed cropping – 15 x 15 ft, Farm boundaries – 8 x 8 ft.
Trees per acre – 500 trees.
Land preparation
A couple of ploughing is necessary to bring the soil to a fine tilth. Pick tiny stones and throw them outside the farm. Weed removal is necessary at regular intervals. Dig 2 feet wider and deeper pit and fill it with topsoil mix. If you are doing mixed cropping then the Sheesham plantation distance should be 15 x 15 ft for better growth of both plants.
Whereas a hybrid plantation needs a 9 x 9 ft distance. You can also plant these trees at the boundaries of your farm with a spacing of 8 x 8 feet.
Tree care – Two to three times weed removal is necessary. Weeding is not required after 3 years of plantation. To get the best timber wood regular pruning is necessary. Regular pruning increases the quality of timber hence it is recommended to practice regular pruning in farming.
Indian Rosewood tree growth time
A hybrid variety needs 10 to 12 years to reach the maturity level under good farm practices including drip irrigations. In 8 years if the diameter of the tree reaches 32 to 36 inches or 3 feet, it has a great demand in the said diameter also. After 10 to 12 years the tree reaches 35 – 40 inches in diameter which produces 20 to 25 ghan feet of wood. 80 % of the timber colour changes into an almond or reddish colour.
Rosewood uses and benefits
After 10 to 12 years the timber is used for multipurposes. Its wood leaves and roots all are used for various purposes. Its leaves, oil and roots are used in the medical industry for various treatments.
Its wood is usually used for making premium furniture including house construction and household furniture. The leaves contain a good amount of proteins and are used in animal fodder.
Its roots turn land more fertile and seeds and wood produce essential oil. The essential oil is used for making medicines.
Wood selling near me
If you are thinking about where to sell wood then I would like to tell you there are little wood markets in every city. You must have seen a vegetable mandi in your city that vegetable and fruit sellers use to sell their vegetables and fruits in large quantities (full vegetable trucks) from different states or cities.
Just like this, we all have small wood markets in our cities where we can sell the wood directly to the mandi owner. Wood mandi owners keep some commission and sell your wood to the factory owners, and furniture shop owners via an auction process.
Project Report
Cost per acre Hybrid rosewood sapling cost = Rs 100. Trees per acre = 500. Plantation cost = 500 plants x Rs 100. Total plant material cost = Rs 50,000. Drip irrigation cost per acre = Rs 45,900 (installation cost). Irrigation cost = Rs 12,000. Labour cost = Rs 15,000. Pesticides and fertilizer cost = Rs 8000. Plant protection charges = Rs 6000. Miscellaneous cost = Rs 5000. Total cost for 1st year = Rs 1,41,900. Let’s calculate the cost for 10 years. For that reduce the 1 time investment cost i.e. planting material cost and drip irrigation cost. 1 time investment cost = Rs 50,000 + Rs 45,900 = Rs 95,900. 10 year cost = (1st year cost) Rs 1,41,900 – Rs 95,900 (1 time investment). 10 year cost = 46000. 10 year cost = Rs 46,000 x 9 years. Cost = Rs 4,14000. Now finally add 1-time investment cost i.e. planting material + drip irrigation. 10 year cost = Rs 4,14,000 + Rs 95,900. 10 year cost = Rs 509900. Rosewood profit per acre Indian Rosewood tree price after 10 years = Rs 40,000 per tree. Rosewood trees per acre = 500 trees. If 250 trees are in good selling condition. Then multiply the number of trees by the Sheesham tree price. 1 Sheesham tree price = Rs 40,000. Then, 250 trees x 40,000 = 10000000. Net Profit = tree profit per acre – cost per acre. Net Profit = 1 crore – Rs 50,9900. Net Profit = Rs 94,90,100. Note – This is the assumption of the Rosewood Cultivation Project Report. Prices may vary according to the market, demand and selling price in your area. |
