Land preparation for pineapple and practices

Pineapple cultivation started in Brazil and spread to other tropical parts of the world. It is a commercial fruit crop and its total estimated world production is 14.6 million tonnes. India holds 5th position in pineapple production and apart from India pineapple cultivation in USA, Thailand, Philippines, Brazil, Nigeria, Indonesia and Columbia is popular among farmers.

Land preparation for pineapple and practices

Begins with the ploughing of the land followed by levelling. The preparation of trenches depends on the nature of the land. Convenient trenches of 90 cm in length and 15 to 30 cm in depth are prepared.

Flatbed, furrow and trench are four different planting systems used in this cultivation.

The contour method is very helpful for reducing soil erosion in rainfall regions. It is mostly used in preparing the land for pineapple cultivation because these fruits are mostly cultivated under rainfed conditions. A mulching method is used and dry leaves and straw are used as mulching. Mulching with black polythene and straw dust creates a good effect on the ground. To reduce sunburn and damage mature fruits should be covered by rice straw or pineapple leaves.
