Mango grafting techniques

Expert way of grafting- First you need 1-2 months old plant with healthy roots. In grafting technique you need to join two twigs of two different plants. One offset of new plant and other one is of mature plant.

Lets do it step by step -

  1. Take a sprig(0.5-1 feet) of a mature plant that is already giving fruits.
  2.  Use a clean and sharp knife to scratch the twig and tie both twigs with each other.
  3. Remove rind of lower portion of mature twig and cut the upper portion of new plant vertically so that you can put the mature twig into the new plant twig.
  4. Make sure that rind remove portion of both plants should contact each other comfortably.
  5. Tie hard both the twigs with a thin rope then tie it completely with a poly, don't allow air to pass.
  6. Don't put the plant in sunlight instead cover it with the polyethene bag for at least a month for successful result.
  7.  One important thing to remember before attaching sprigs is choose a mature twig without any leaf because roots of new plant is not capable of providing food to leaves in initial days.
  8. Apply the technique according to your whether eg in north India Jan to March and July to Aug are the most suitable months for applying grafting technique

Reason behind failure of mango grafting techniques

  • Selection of dirty knife.
  • Selection of wrong or unfruitful tree twig
  • After attaching twigs putting the plant straight into the direct sunlight
  • Not tied correctly
  • Allowing air to pass between both the twigs
  • Didn't covered the plant with polyethene bag
  • Applied the process in inappropriate whether

What is air layering technique

Experiments are part of our life and air layering is one more innovation in the field of plant and agriculture like grafting. In air layering technique we just have to remove rind of specific portion of the plant and attach a bag filled with soil mix and few days later it will produce new roots in the bag then you can cut it and plant it somewhere else.

Innovations cant stop - In place of soil bags only water bags were also used and plant has produced the roots in water bag as well. It is also done as same as the above process only bags are changed. These are quite exciting and non expensive experiments that you can try easily at your home. Later on one more experiment has taken place in which wet paper is tied on the rind removal portion of the plant and still it manages to produce roots.

To grow mango tree faster or any other tree faster one technique is becoming popular day by day. In this technique seven other roots are tied with a single plant. These roots are tied on the rind removal portion of the plant. Then it is covered by a polythene bag and some soil mix along with nutrients, phosphorus provide to all the roots. After one month your plant is ready to be planted in a new pot. Later it can deliver fruits six months earlier than the regular plant.

amrapali mango

First allow the plant to grow at least for 2 to 2.5 months. To increase the fruit first you need to increase the twigs and for that a simple process is done. A slight side cut is require but before cutting it you need to note some bales below the cutting portion. After couple of months new branches will grow and you can apply the same process with new branches and this process can be applied for 3 to 4 more times. It is also called as 3g cutting and 4g cutting.

While 3rd branch fruit blooming takes place easily. Also keep pruning and cutting the week branches. Usually it delivers the fruit in the first year but you can use this time to give proper shape to your plant by applying the above method so that it can deliver much more fruits for the rest of the years. So it is suggested to take the advantage of fruits from 2nd year so that it can improve the root strength as well.

Best soil for mango tree in pot

While choosing the soil you need to understand the base of fertilizer. It is quite interesting concept. Soil contains various elements some elements helps improving the root system, some helps improving leaves and some elements helps improving the taste of the fruit.

When scientist got to know that one element is used to increase the leaf of the plant later it was named nitrogen while searching about the root they found such element that is responsible for the growth of stem, root and it was named phosphorous. While searching for the reason for the sweetness of the fruit they found an element and now it is known as potassium.

Hence, formula of NPK found and NPK is well known for chemicals and quite popular in the market. Now you can easily understand there are various elements responsible for the growth of different parts of the plant. So you can choose the particular element as fertilizer to feed your plant. In the initial days, the plant does not deliver fruit so you can avoid potassium for a couple of months.

And when it will reach the stage of delivering fruits then you can add potassium accordingly. Thus you can select the right fertilizer for your plant.
However, using organic fertilizer all the elements were combined and the plant automatically picks the right element accordingly.

Still, we can classify it in the form of NPK but we will use NPK organically for better health and long term growth -
Nitrogen is found in animal manure, Phosphorous is found in Vermicomposting and Potassium is found in the banana peel and ash.
