Carrot grass is also known as chatak chandani and this grass has a tendency of spreading rapidly. Carrot grass is an annual plant and it is a herbaceous plant which grows rapidly in all types of environments and becomes a serious problem for crops as well as animals and humans. This destructive weed should be controlled in time unless it may increase the density of destruction. In western Uttar Pradesh, “Chidiya Bari” is another name for this grass. 

Carrot grass can be used in the manufacture of various types of insecticides, pesticides and bactericidal and weed-killer medicines. Various types of papers can be prepared from the pulp of carrot grass and it can also be mixed with cow dung in biogas production. 

There are 20 types of carrot grass found in the world. This weed is widely spread in America, Mexico, West Indies, India, Vietnam and Australia. Carrot weed came to India 3 decades ago along with wheat from Canada or America.

Gajar ghas plants description

Stem – The carrot grass stem is highly branched and it is up to 1.5 meters tall. 

Leaves – Its leaf is unusually like carrot leaves.

Fruit – Gajar ghas contains white colour fruit. 

Seeds – Each gajar plant produces 1000 to 50,000 microscopic seeds which germinate in very short period after falling to the ground, receiving moisture in light and darkness.  

Growing season – This type of plant completes its life cycle in 3 to 4 months and grows and flowers throughout the year. It is environment-friendly grass and grows rapidly in all types of environments and seasons.

Carrot weed affects the development of root glands and also reduces the activity of nitrogen-fixing bacteria in leguminous crops.

This usually causes chlorophyll deficiency in leaves and abnormality in flower tops. Due to continued exposure to carrot weed, humans may suffer from diseases like dermatitis, eczema, allergies, fever, asthma etc. This weed is also harmful to animals, causing bitterness in the milk animals. Solutions 

Legal mechanical, biological and chemical methods are used for the prevention of carrot grass. To control it in non-agricultural areas the herbicide chemical atrazine is used at 1.5° kg per hectare before flowering. Glyphosate 2 kg per hectare and metribuzin 2 kg per hectare should be applied before the grass flowering. Atrazine 1 to 1.5° kg from crops of maize, jawar, bajra these ingredients should be applied per hectare immediately after sowing (before germination).
