Popular tree price = Rs 1500/quintal, Average 1 tree price = Rs 2500, 1 acre = 300 trees.
Poplar tree profit per acre and cost calculation given below in detail.
In 1 acre you can plant around 303 trees with a distance of 12 ft x 12 ft.
The idle distance to grow trees taller and healthier is 12 ft x 12 ft, check STN tree calculator for spacing.
Cost calculation
Number of saplings per acre – Average 300 saplings are planted in the 1 acre farm. The plant’s number is decided on the basis of distance.
According to experienced farmers like Rajendra and Akhlakh the idle distance should be around 12 ft x 12 ft. You can check these farmers’ videos in the Trending Nature YT channel that belongs to STN.
Land preparation – First land is prepared, it is made smooth with the help of tractors, small farmers use ploughs and rotavators as well. In India labour is cheap and you still need to pay around Rs 6,000 to Rs 8000 to prepare one acre land for farming. The price depends on the labour and equipment used.
One plant price – In India the average sapling price varies between Rs 28 to Rs 32 per plant especially in Uttarakhand region. If you paid Rs 30/plant and bought 300 plants then 300 plants x Rs 30 = Rs 9000 would be plants cost.
Fertilizer cost – Natural organic fertilizer is best for trees as they take time to grow and organic fertilizer also needs time to produce good results. However, you can use DAP and regit for better growth. The average fertiliser cost for 300 trees would be around Rs 3000 to Rs 3500 for 1 year and for 3 years it would be Rs 3000 x 3 years = Rs 9000.
Irrigation cost – As per experienced farmers you should give water to plants every month. Please check the watering video in our YT channel. Average Rs 5000 is one year irrigation cost in India for poplar trees. For 3.5 years the cost would be Rs 5000 x 3.5 years = Rs 17,500.
Pruning cost – First pruning is done after 1 year when the plant grows a bit taller and becomes a young tree. At least one pruning is required per year, it may increase twice a year depending on the number of leaves branches growth. For a total 3 years around Rs 7000 to Rs 9000 required to do the pruning for 300 trees.
Maintenance cost – Time to time extra grass removal near roots is performed. It is done 2-3 times in a year and may cost around Rs 2000/year.
Fencing cost – Some time it may or may not be required depending on the location. If required then around Rs 50,000 needed for 1 acre poplar farm.
Harvesting cost – It is done through contractors and self. If you will do it on your own then labours and equipment are needed and you have to spend around Rs 25,000 to Rs 35,000 for harvesting 300 trees. It included labour cost and agriculture cutting tools cost.
Total cost for 1 year – Fertilizer cost Rs 3000 + Irrigation cost Rs 5,000 + Pruning cost Rs 3000 + Maintenance cost Rs 3500 + Rs 9000 (plants cost) + Rs 7,000 (planting cost) + Rs 50,000 (fencing cost) + Rs 6000 (land preparation cost) = Rs 86,500.
Total cost for 3.5 years
To get 3.5 years cost first exclude the one time investment cost which is Rs 9000 (plants cost) + Rs 7,000 (planting cost) + Rs 50,000 (fencing cost) + Rs 6000 (land preparation cost) = Rs 72,000.
Now deduct Rs 72,000 from 1st year cost. Rs 86,500 – Rs 72,000 = Rs 14,500. Now multiply it with 3.5 years i.e. Rs 14500 x 3.5 years = Rs 50750.
Now add one time cost to the above given total cost i.e. Rs 9000 (plants cost) + Rs 7,000 (planting cost) + Rs 50,000 (fencing cost) + Rs 6000 (land preparation cost) + Harvesting cost Rs 35,000 total cost with Rs 50750 to get total 3.5 years cost. After adding all the total cost for 3.5 years would be Rs 1,57,750.
If you already have a fence or not needed then subtract Rs 50,000, costing will be reduced. Some farmers collaborate for water supply which decreases the irrigation cost as well.
Profit per acre
The poplar tree price after 3.5 years is around Rs 2000 to Rs 3000 per tree. If the average price is Rs 2500/tree then the total profit would be Rs 2500 x 300 trees = Rs 7,50,000.
To get net profit for 3.5 years reduce the cost from the profit: Rs 7,50,000 – Rs 1,57,750 = Rs 5,92,250.

Poplar tree farming in India
The problem is that farmers are not aware of the best poplar tree variety because there are lots of varieties. Most farmers are still cultivating the old varieties like g48, 86 etc. These species take almost 5 to 7 years to get ready for harvesting.
As per agriculture tree experts for huge profit one can plant a mahogany tree if looking for tree farming for a 7-8 years long period. Mahogany trees get ready for harvesting in 8 to 10 years and the ideal time is 12 to 15 years.
They still produce a good amount in 10 years and rate for mahogany trees after 10 years is around Rs 15000.
If you don’t want to wait for 7 to 8 long years while doing tree cultivation. If you are looking for fast growing trees then the poplar tree is one of the fastest growing trees in India.
I am talking about a hybrid poplar tree that grows only in 3.5 years to 4 years. They achieve a very good height of around 65 feet to 75 feet within this period. Farmers are already growing this tree in Roorkee, Uttarakhand. You can check out the YouTube video as well. Not only in Uttarakhand Poplar tree farming in Punjab is also very popular.
If you are thinking how these trees grow only in 3.5 years then let me clear for new plantations. On average one-year-old popular plants are picked from nursery and planted on the farm.
While picking them from nursery and planting in the farm they are already 6 feet to 16 feet tall. From the planting period they need at least 3.5 years to 4 years to grow mature. It means the hybrid poplar tree needs 1 year (nursery) + 3.5 years (farm) = 4.5 years to 5 years.
I hope now you understand how this tree grows only in 3.5 years. Hence, we can say it is one of the fastest growing trees in the world as well.
