Drumstick trees are 10 to 12 m in height and are considered small to medium height trees. The tree trunk grows about 35 cm to 45 cm. These trees are grown in tropical and subtropical regions. Some important and basic points are given below to start moringa farming from the beginning.
Varieties
ODC is used currently in moringa farming by most farmers. Some other varieties are PKM1, PKM2, Chavakachcheri, Chem Murungai, Kudumiyanmalai 1, Mulanur moringa, Valayapatti etc.
Moringa varieties are grown perennial and annual. Perennial varieties take a long time to grow, hence not practiced. Whereas annual varieties are fast growing trees and are popular among farmers.
Climate
Subtropical and tropical climate conditions are considered moringa tree growing zones.
Temperature – 25°C to 35°C.
Soil needs
Drumstick trees can be grown in a wide range of soil but prefer red and black soils for better thrive. The pH between 6.0 to 7.0 is needed.
Water need
Drumstick trees need less water to grow and survive hence moringa cultivation can also be done in drought conditions. Irrigation is required once a week in the first 3 months for this fast growing tree. After 3 months the water is required once in 10 to 12 days.
