Seed sowing season

In South, India fenugreek is grown as both Rabi and Kharif season crops. The best time for sowing its rabi crop is the first fortnight of october and the best time for sowing its Kharif crop is the 2nd Fortnite of June to July. Rabi crop yields higher than Kharif crop. Seed rate – The ideal seed rate for its rabi and Kharif crop is 25 kg per hectare.

Plant spacing

Seed sowing – 30 cm row spacing and 10 cm plant spacing. Whereas depth should not be more than 5.0 cm. For leafy vegetables, September to march middle is recommended for sowing. You should prepare the field soil before sowing the seeds.

Manure and fertilizer

During soil preparation – Add 20 to 30 cartloads of farmyard manure or add compost of 15 to 20 tons per hectare.

During sowing – Add 50 kg nitrogen per hectare and 40 kg P205/ha. Reduce the dose of Nitrogen if inherent soil fertility is high. You should go for a soil test to know the fertility of the soil.

Irrigation required

Light watering is required immediately after the sowing process. After sowing the seed irrigation should be given @ 30, 70 to 75, 85 to 90, and 105 to 110 days after sowing the seeds. Make sure sufficient water is provided at the time of pod and seed development stages. Don’t allow standing water on the farm and there should be a proper drainage system to avoid this problem.

Harvesting

The best time for harvesting is when the lower leaves start shedding and pods start turning yellow in colour. In the case of manual harvesting, one shall use a sickle for cutting the plants. Delaying the harvesting is not good and it may cause the shattering of the seeds.
