All the above points are required for vermicompost setup, all points are explained below deeply.
Land at least half beegha
As per the farmer who newly setup vermicompost just beside his popular nursery, only half beegha land is enough to start a vermicompost business.
Vermicompost benefits are vital, it is used as an organic fertilizer for plants and trees, its a profitable business as India is agriculture country and many people are connected with farming.
Land is the first basic requirement where you have to install a compost filter machine, vermicompost bin, earth warms and arrange cow dung for preparation.
See below given video for step by step info to install vermicompost setup near your farm.
Raw cow dung fresh
As per the business owner Dinesh Kumar and colleague Pawan Kumar once you have a land the 1st step is to collect raw fresh cow dung.
So, collect only raw fresh cow dung, and avoid old dung. He advised cow dung should be cold not warm so after collecting the dung keep it on land for a few days.
You can use 10 day old cow dung for this process, if you just collected the cow dung from any milk dairy then dump it in your farm for at least 2-3 days so its all hotness gets out.
If you put earthworms in warm cow dung then earthworms will die. Colding cow dung mainly required in summers, in winters it colds early so keep checking it.
Prepare beds
Prepare beds of cow dung After cooling the cow dung, prepare some beds in rows as shown in the video.
Make sure before preparing the beds put mulching paper on the land then prepare beds.
It is to prevent earthworms going deeper inside the land. If you will not place a mulching paper below the beds your efforts will be drowned. After mulch paper, put the cold cow dung on the beds.
Earthworm
After preparing the beds, put earthworms over the beds. Spread them all over the beds. You can buy earthworms online or offline as per your convenience.
No need to force or press earthworms just leave them over the bed they will go inside the cow dung on their own.
After putting earthworms on the beds, give some water to keep the beds moist, don’t over water.
Now cover the beds with a green mat. It is done to keep the earthworms in the dark which increases breeding. To increase the breeding you can make a mix of sugar, raw jaggery and gram flour.
Vermicompost making time duration after putting earthworms on raw cow dung beds
Once you have covered the beds and earthworms are put on it and beds are covered with green mat.
Now leave it for at least 3 to 4 months in between and keep spreading some water as per the requirement. After 3-4 months the number of earthworms will increase, that’s what you need.
Cow dung colour will change from light brown to black after 3-4 months. If you see the blackish colour dung, it means cow dung is riped.
Separate the ripe cow dung which has now become a vermicompost, ready for filtering.
Vermi compost pit to extract earthworms
Put the prepared vermicompost in the pit. Put some raw cowdung near by just prepared vermicompost, it is done to attract all the earthworms from just prepared vermicompost to the raw cow dung which is helpful in extracting earthworms from prepared compost.
However, the main purpose of the pit is to prepare a high quality nutrient rich compost by putting earthworms together with organic waste.
Vermicompost machine
Now put the newly prepared vermicompost into the filtering machine, it will filter the pure vermicompost. Dump the pure compost properly at one place.
Pack vermicompost in bags
Finally pack the newly prepared and filtered vermicompost into the bags. Farmer Dinesh and Pawan are selling bags of 40 kg and also 1 to 5 kg bags.
