Carrot farming information

Carrot is an underground crop vegetable containing lots of important nutrients and minerals and a good source of vitamin A as well. They are usually grown in cool places and temperature ranging from 18 °C to 24 °C is good for carrot farming. Higher temperatures and lower temperatures are not suitable for its farming. Moreover, proper care and management can result in a higher yield of carrots per acre. 

Generally, the duration of carrot growing is 3 months but the growing period may vary according to the seed selection. Two kg is the recommended carrot seeds per acre and 4.5 to 5 kg of seeds can be installed per hectare. With good garden practices, one can produce 7000 to 8000 kg of carrots per acre and 18,000 kg to 20,000 kg per hectare.

Profit calculation

• Carrot production per acre = 8000 kg.
• 1 kg carrot price in India is Rs 25 to Rs 35 (average).
• Let’s take Rs 25 per kg. 
• Now multiply the 1 kg price of the crop by the total production in 1 acre.
• Profit = Rs 25 x 8000 kg carrot = Rs 2 lakh.
• Profit = Cost – Profit.

Seed cost

2 kg is the recommended carrot seed rate per acre and the cost for high-yielding seeds is Rupees 1500 per kg therefore for 2 kg it will be 1500 x 2 = Rs 3000. Hence, Rs 3000 is the seed cost.

Land preparation cost

4 days are more than enough for preparing 1 acre of land for planting carrots in Singapore. Land preparation includes ploughing, harrowing and bed preparation which requires at least two labours per day and the labour cost is Rs 280-300 per day in India whereas it will be higher in Singapore i.e 5.05 to 10 (SGD) or even more. Let’s take Rupees 280 per labour and for 2 labours the cost will be Rs 280 x 2 labours = Rs 560. Now calculate the cost for 2 labours for 4 days i.e Rs 560 x 4 days = Rs 2240

Fertilization cost

Carrot fertilizer application is considered 10 tons FYM per acre and the ratio should be 20 : 16 : 20 NPK costing Rs 2000/acre. 

Pesticide cost

Pests – leaf-eating caterpillars and other insects.

Solutions – Use malathion 2ml per litre of water to control insects and pests in crops. Use pesticides for carrot root fly as well.

Fungicides – like Malathion 2 ml/lt with wettable sulphur 3 gm or hexaconazole 2 ml/lt water or diamothonate 2 ml/ lt water as a spray application.

Budget– Rs 2500 to get all these pesticides for spraying in a 1-acre farm in India.

Labour cost

Intercultural operations in agriculture include land preparation, weeding, irrigation, spraying, and other miscellaneous activities, all need to be done for 14 weeks in 1-acre carrot farming in India. Labour cost in agriculture varies between Rs 250, Rs 280 and Rs 300 as per the locality and the labour required per week is 3 to 5. Let’s take 3 labour per week and cost Rs 280 then for 14 weeks labour cost will be 3 x 14 = 42 labours, and 1 labour cost is Rs 280 therefore 42 labour x Rs 280 = Rs 11,760.

Harvesting cost

Carrot harvesting mostly takes place after 85 to 90 days from the seed sowing time. For harvesting and packing the carrots into the crates, at least 5 to 6 labours are required. For easy uprooting of the carrots from the soil, one last irrigation should be given one day before harvesting. Harvesting costs along with packaging and loading the trays to the trucks, you need to spend nearly Rs 5500. These underground root vegetables can easily survive up to three months if they are stored in a cold store and one can sell them when the price goes higher.

Marketing cost

For transportation of the product to the market and for cold storage farmers are spending Rs 5000 approximately. 

Miscellaneous cost

Miscellaneous costs including other farm management activities such as farm machinery rent, and additional labour costs may incur up to Rs 7000 for 80 to 100 days.
